Koh Phangan Waterfalls, Viewpoints & Jungle Hikes

waterfalls hiking koh phangan activities nature

Beneath the party reputation and the beach photos, Koh Phangan is a jungle island. Nearly half the island is covered in dense tropical forest, and hidden inside that green canopy are waterfalls, viewpoints, and hiking trails that most visitors never discover. At Eclipse Hostel & Bar, we think the jungle side of Koh Phangan is just as essential as the beaches and the nightlife. Here is your guide to the best of it.

Phaeng Waterfall and Domesila Viewpoint

If you only have time for one nature excursion on Koh Phangan, make it this one. Phaeng Waterfall sits inside Than Sadet National Park, just a 10-minute drive from Thong Sala, the island’s main town. Entry to the national park costs around 100 THB for foreign visitors.

The waterfall itself is beautiful — a multi-tiered cascade tumbling over moss-covered rocks into clear pools below. During and after the rainy season, the flow is powerful, and the mist rising from the falls keeps the surrounding jungle lush and cool. Even in the drier months, there is enough water to make the visit worthwhile.

But the real reward is the Domesila Viewpoint. From the base of the waterfall, a trail leads uphill through the jungle for about 15 minutes to a rocky outcrop with panoramic views of Koh Phangan and, on clear days, Koh Samui across the strait. It is one of those views that makes you stop talking and just stand there. The full trail loop, including the waterfall and viewpoint, takes about two hours at a relaxed pace.

Tips: Wear proper shoes with grip — the rocks near the falls can be slippery. Bring water and insect repellent. The trail is well-marked but steep in places.

Than Sadet Waterfall

Than Sadet is the most historically significant waterfall on Koh Phangan and arguably the most beautiful. Located on the east coast of the island, it flows through a series of granite boulders into natural swimming pools before emptying into the sea. What makes it unique is its royal connection — several Thai kings have visited Than Sadet over the decades, and their royal monograms are carved directly into the rocks along the river. You can still see these engravings today, which gives the place a gravity that other waterfalls lack.

The entry fee is around 100 THB, and the trail follows the river upstream through multiple tiers of cascades. The swimming pools are large enough to properly swim in, and on a hot day there is nothing better than floating in cool mountain water surrounded by jungle. The hike from the bottom to the upper tiers takes about 45 minutes each way.

Getting to Than Sadet requires either a motorbike ride along some of the island’s steeper roads or a longtail boat from Haad Rin. If you are renting a motorbike, check our motorbike rental guide for tips on navigating the island’s hills safely.

Paradise Waterfall

Paradise Waterfall is smaller and less visited than Phaeng or Than Sadet, which is exactly its appeal. Located near Baan Tai on the southern coast, it is easy to reach and rarely crowded. The falls drop into a peaceful pool surrounded by boulders and jungle, and you will often have the place to yourself during the week.

It is a good option for travelers who want a waterfall experience without committing to a full day of hiking. The walk from the parking area takes about 15 minutes on a flat, shaded path.

Wang Sai Waterfall

Wang Sai is the most accessible waterfall on Koh Phangan. Located in the center of the island, it is easy to reach by motorbike or even by taxi, and the path from the road to the falls is short and family-friendly. The waterfall is modest in size compared to Than Sadet or Phaeng, but the surrounding area is peaceful, and there is a natural pool at the base where you can cool off.

Wang Sai is a good choice if you are traveling with younger kids or if you want a quick nature break between exploring night markets and heading to the beach.

Khao Ra: The Island’s Highest Peak

For serious hikers, Khao Ra is the ultimate challenge on Koh Phangan. At 627 meters, it is the highest point on the island, and the trail to the summit takes roughly two to three hours each way through dense jungle. This is not a casual stroll — the path is steep, often muddy, and marked with ropes in the steepest sections. But the reward is a view from above the tree canopy that stretches across the entire island and out to the gulf beyond.

The trailhead is in the north of the island, and it is best to start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Bring plenty of water — at least two liters per person — along with snacks, a rain jacket (showers can appear quickly), and shoes with serious grip. Some travelers hire a local guide, which is recommended if you are not an experienced hiker.

Khao Ra is one of those experiences that stays with you. Standing on top of the island, surrounded by nothing but sky and jungle, you understand why so many travelers fall in love with Koh Phangan.

Bottle Beach Viewpoint

Bottle Beach is one of the most stunning and secluded beaches on Koh Phangan, and reaching it is an adventure in itself. Most visitors arrive by longtail boat from Chaloklum, but you can also hike in from the east side of the island. The trail passes through jungle and includes a rope climb section — nothing dangerous, but it gets your heart rate up.

Near the trail, the Bottle Beach Viewpoint offers a dramatic perspective down onto the crescent of white sand and turquoise water below. It is one of the most photographed spots on the island, and it earns every bit of that reputation. The viewpoint is particularly stunning in the late afternoon when the light softens and the water glows.

420 Club (Formerly 360 Viewpoint)

The 420 Club, previously known as the 360 Viewpoint, is part panoramic viewpoint, part hilltop cafe. Perched on a hillside above Mae Haad on the northwest coast, it offers sweeping views over the ocean and the surrounding islands.

The cafe serves drinks and light food, making it a perfect spot to watch the sunset. The vibe is laid-back, with cushions and hammocks scattered around the viewing platforms. It is reachable by motorbike, though the final stretch of road is steep and unpaved. Park carefully and walk the last section if the road looks too rough.

For sunset views, the 420 Club is hard to beat. Pair it with a stop at one of the west coast beaches for a full afternoon of scenery.

Best Time to Visit

Waterfalls on Koh Phangan are at their most impressive between August and December, after the rains have filled the rivers and streams. During these months, Phaeng and Than Sadet are thundering, the pools are deep enough for proper swimming, and the jungle is at its most vibrant green. Even during the rainy season, rain tends to fall in short bursts rather than all-day downpours, so you can usually hike between showers.

In the dry season (January through April), the smaller waterfalls may slow to a trickle, but the viewpoints and hiking trails are at their best — dry paths, clear skies, and excellent visibility.

What to Bring

  • Proper footwear. Trail running shoes or hiking sandals with good grip. Flip-flops are not suitable for any of these hikes.
  • Water. At least one liter for short hikes, two liters for Khao Ra.
  • Swimwear. Most waterfalls have swimmable pools.
  • Insect repellent. The jungle is home to mosquitoes, especially near water.
  • Camera. The viewpoints on Koh Phangan are among the most photogenic in the gulf.
  • Cash. National park entry fees are cash-only.

Your Base for Adventure

Koh Phangan’s jungle interior is one of the island’s greatest treasures, and it is right outside your door. After a morning chasing waterfalls, you can spend the afternoon snorkeling at Koh Ma, the evening at a night market, and the night at the Full Moon Party. That range of experience is what makes this island special.

Eclipse Hostel & Bar makes it easy. Take a look at our rooms and book your stay — we will help you plan a route through the jungle that matches your fitness level and ambition.
