Diving & Snorkeling on Koh Phangan: Sail Rock, Schools & Complete Guide

diving snorkeling koh phangan activities

Most travelers associate Thai diving with Koh Tao, but Koh Phangan has a secret weapon: Sail Rock. It is widely considered the best dive site in the entire Gulf of Thailand, and it is only accessible from Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Add in excellent snorkeling spots, reputable dive schools, and a more relaxed island atmosphere, and Koh Phangan is a seriously compelling base for underwater adventures.

Sail Rock: The Gulf’s Best Dive

Sail Rock, known locally as Hin Bai, is a massive underwater pinnacle rising from the deep ocean floor about 60 minutes by boat from Chaloklum Pier on the north coast of Koh Phangan. What makes it exceptional is its sheer size, biodiversity, and one unforgettable feature β€” a vertical chimney swim-through that you can enter at around 18 meters and exit at about 5 meters.

The marine life here is extraordinary. Schools of barracuda, giant groupers, batfish, and trevally are regulars. But the real draw during peak season is whale sharks. Between March and September, these gentle giants pass through the area, and sightings at Sail Rock are more common than at any other site in the gulf. Even without a whale shark encounter, the visibility and the density of life make Sail Rock a world-class dive.

A Sail Rock dive trip typically costs between 2,900 and 4,000 THB depending on the operator and includes two dives, equipment, lunch, and transport from your accommodation. It is an all-day excursion, but it is the single best diving experience you can have from Koh Phangan.

Dive Schools on Koh Phangan

The island has several well-established dive schools, each with its own personality and strengths.

Sail Rock Divers

Sail Rock Divers is a 5-Star PADI Career Development Center, which is the highest rating a dive school can achieve. It is the only CDC on Koh Phangan, making it the go-to choice for anyone considering professional-level dive training. They specialize in Sail Rock trips, as the name suggests, and their instructors know the site intimately.

Asia Blue

Asia Blue is the largest dive operation on the island, with four centers spread across different locations. Their size means they run trips frequently and can accommodate groups of any size. They offer everything from beginner courses to technical diving.

Chaloklum Diving

Based in the fishing village of Chaloklum on the north coast, this school has a more intimate, community feel. Chaloklum is the closest pier to Sail Rock, which means shorter boat rides and more time in the water.

The Dive Inn

The Dive Inn is another well-regarded option with experienced instructors and a relaxed, social atmosphere. As of January 2026, The Dive Inn operates as an SSI center, offering internationally recognized certifications. They are popular with backpackers and solo travelers who want a dive school that doubles as a community.

Course Prices and Options

Diving on Koh Phangan is excellent value. Here is what you can expect to pay:

  • Discover Scuba Diving β€” around 2,990–3,500 THB. This is a half-day introduction for complete beginners. No certification, but you will do a real dive in open water with an instructor by your side.
  • PADI Open Water β€” around 10,490 THB over three days. This is the standard entry-level certification that qualifies you to dive anywhere in the world to 18 meters.
  • PADI Advanced Open Water β€” around 9,480 THB over two days. Takes your certification to 30 meters and includes specialty dives like deep diving, navigation, and night diving.
  • Fun Dive β€” around 2,490 THB per trip (typically includes two dives) for certified divers. Just show up with your card and go diving.
  • Sail Rock Trip β€” between 2,900 and 4,000 THB for a two-dive trip to the pinnacle, depending on the operator.

Prices are competitive with Koh Tao. While Tao has historically been cheaper for certifications, the gap has narrowed, and Koh Phangan offers a more varied island experience when you are not underwater. You get the beaches, the nightlife, the food scene, and the yoga culture alongside your diving β€” something Koh Tao cannot match.

Koh Phangan vs Koh Tao for Diving

This is the question every diver asks, and the honest answer is that both islands are worth visiting. Here is how they compare:

Koh Tao has more dive sites overall, cheaper certifications by a small margin, and a town built almost entirely around diving. If your sole purpose is to get certified as quickly and cheaply as possible, Tao is a strong choice.

Koh Phangan has Sail Rock β€” the single best site in the gulf β€” plus a much broader range of activities and experiences on land. The island is larger, more diverse, and has better food, better beaches, and a more developed social scene. If you want to dive and do other things, Koh Phangan is the better base.

Best Snorkeling Spots

You do not need a dive certification to enjoy Koh Phangan’s underwater world. The island has several excellent snorkeling spots that are accessible from the shore or by short boat trip.

Koh Ma

Koh Ma is a small island connected to the northwest tip of Koh Phangan by a natural sandbar that is exposed at low tide. You can walk across to the island and snorkel in the sheltered waters on either side. The coral here is healthy, and you will regularly see parrotfish, triggerfish, and anemonefish. It is one of the best snorkeling spots in the entire gulf.

Haad Yao

Haad Yao, or Long Beach, has a coral reef running along the southern end of the beach. You can snorkel directly from the shore, which makes it incredibly convenient. The water is calm and clear for most of the year.

Haad Salad

Another west coast beach with good snorkeling right off the sand. Haad Salad is quieter than Haad Yao and has a more secluded feel. The reef is close to shore and teeming with tropical fish.

Bottle Beach

Bottle Beach is one of the most beautiful and remote beaches on the island. Getting there requires a boat from Chaloklum or a steep jungle hike (which also gives you access to the Bottle Beach Viewpoint). The snorkeling is excellent, and the isolation means fewer people in the water.

Snorkeling Tours

If you want to hit multiple spots in one day, snorkeling tours run regularly from various piers around the island. A full-day tour costs between 1,500 and 2,500 THB per person and typically includes gear, lunch, and visits to three or four sites. These tours are a great way to see the coastline and discover beaches that are hard to reach by land.

Best Time to Dive and Snorkel

The best season for diving and snorkeling on Koh Phangan runs from March to September. During these months, the seas are calmest, visibility is at its best (often exceeding 20 meters), and the chances of encountering whale sharks at Sail Rock are highest.

That said, diving is available year-round. Even during the rainy season, there are plenty of days with good conditions, and dive schools run trips whenever it is safe to do so. The water temperature stays warm throughout the year β€” typically between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius β€” so you can comfortably dive in a shorty wetsuit or even just a rash guard.

Practical Tips

  • Book in advance during peak season. Sail Rock trips in particular can fill up, especially around the Full Moon Party when the island is at capacity.
  • Bring your own mask if you have one. Rental gear is fine, but a well-fitted mask makes a big difference.
  • Do not dive and fly within 24 hours. Plan your last dive at least a full day before your flight.
  • Stay hydrated. Diving in tropical heat is dehydrating. Drink plenty of water between dives.
  • Check your insurance. Make sure your travel insurance covers diving to the depth you plan to go. Some policies exclude it.

Dive In

Whether you are a complete beginner doing your first Discover Scuba dive or a certified diver chasing whale sharks at Sail Rock, Koh Phangan delivers underwater experiences that rival anywhere in Southeast Asia. And when you surface, you have an entire island of food, waterfalls, and nightlife waiting for you.
