Best Day Trips from Koh Phangan

day trips koh phangan activities travel

Koh Phangan is more than Full Moon Parties and beach bars. The island sits in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in Southeast Asia — and the best of it is accessible on a day trip. Whether you want to snorkel a marine park, dive with whale sharks, or catch your own dinner on a squid fishing boat, you can do it all and be back at Eclipse Hostel & Bar by sunset.

Here are the best day trips from Koh Phangan, based on what our guests and staff love most.

Ang Thong Marine National Park

This is the big one — and for good reason. Ang Thong is an archipelago of 42 islands about 30 kilometers west of Koh Phangan. Think towering limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, empty beaches, and water so clear it looks fake in photos. This is the landscape that inspired Alex Garland’s novel The Beach.

Most tours depart by speedboat from Thong Sala and run a full day. A typical trip includes:

  • Kayaking through the islands and into sea caves
  • Snorkeling over shallow coral reefs
  • Hiking to the Emerald Lake (Thale Nai), a saltwater lake in the middle of one of the islands — the viewpoint from the top is spectacular
  • Lunch on the beach, usually included in the tour price

Practicalities:

  • Tours start from around 1,700 THB per person, which typically includes hotel pickup, lunch, kayaking, and snorkeling gear.
  • National park entry fee is an additional 300 THB for adults, 150 THB for children.
  • The best conditions are from March through October. The park is sometimes closed in November and December due to rough seas — check before booking.
  • Book through a reputable tour operator in Thong Sala or ask us at Eclipse. Avoid the cheapest options, as boat quality and safety gear vary.

If Ang Thong is the only day trip you do from Koh Phangan, you won’t regret it.

Koh Tao: Diving and Snorkeling

Koh Tao is the dive capital of Thailand, and it’s just a one- to two-hour ferry ride from Koh Phangan. A day trip is tight but absolutely doable, especially if you want to try diving for the first time.

Discover Scuba Diving programs let complete beginners make their first open-water dive on the same day. You’ll get a morning briefing and pool session followed by an afternoon reef dive. It’s one of the most popular things travelers do in the Gulf, and Koh Tao’s calm, warm waters make it an ideal place to start.

If diving isn’t your thing, Koh Tao’s snorkeling is world-class on its own. Shark Bay, Japanese Gardens, and Aow Leuk are all excellent spots accessible by longtail boat.

Ferries run multiple times daily from Thong Sala. If you’re comparing the three islands, check out our Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui vs Koh Tao breakdown.

Koh Nang Yuan

Often combined with a Koh Tao trip, Koh Nang Yuan is a trio of small islands connected by a stunning sandbar — and it’s one of the most photographed spots in Thailand. The viewpoint hike takes about 15 minutes and rewards you with a panoramic view over the sandbar and surrounding water.

What to know:

  • Entry fee is 250 THB for adults.
  • No single-use plastic, reef shoes, or fins allowed on the island — they’ll make you leave them on the boat. Bring a reusable water bottle.
  • It gets crowded midday when the tour boats arrive. If you’re coming independently, arrive early.

The snorkeling right off the sandbar is surprisingly good, with plenty of fish and the occasional turtle.

Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)

You don’t need to leave Koh Phangan to feel like you’ve discovered a hidden paradise. Bottle Beach is one of the island’s most beautiful and least accessible beaches — which is exactly why it’s still beautiful.

The easiest way to get there is by longtail boat from Chaloklum, which takes about 15 minutes and costs roughly 150 THB per person. You can also hike in from the north, though the trail is steep and rugged.

Once you arrive, there are a few basic restaurants right on the beach. Grab a fruit shake, swim in the calm water, and enjoy the feeling of being somewhere truly off the beaten path. You can catch a boat back in the afternoon or stay for sunset if you find a later ride.

Koh Ma and Mae Haad Beach

At the northwest tip of Koh Phangan, a natural sandbar connects Mae Haad Beach to the small island of Koh Ma at low tide. You can literally walk across. This is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island — the reef around Koh Ma is healthy, colorful, and sheltered from strong currents.

Tips:

  • Check the tide schedule before going. The sandbar is walkable at low tide but submerged at high tide.
  • Bring your own snorkel gear or rent from vendors at Mae Haad Beach.
  • The area is part of a marine conservation zone, so don’t touch or stand on the coral.

It’s an easy half-day trip and pairs well with lunch at one of the beachside restaurants.

Around-the-Island Boat Tour

Want to see all of Koh Phangan’s coastline in a single day? Charter a longtail boat and circle the island. This is a fantastic way to discover hidden bays, snorkeling spots, and beaches that are impossible to reach by road.

A half-day longtail charter typically costs between 2,000 and 3,000 THB for the whole boat (not per person), making it surprisingly affordable if you split the cost with a few friends from the hostel.

Your captain can drop anchor wherever looks good — swim, snorkel, or just float in the water. Ask to stop at some of the east coast beaches like Haad Thian or Haad Yuan for lunch.

Night Squid Fishing from Chaloklum

This is one of Koh Phangan’s most unique experiences and something most visitors never hear about. Chaloklum, a fishing village on the north coast, is home to a small fleet of squid fishing boats that head out after dark.

Here’s how it works: you board a traditional wooden boat, head out into the gulf, and use bright lights and special jigs to lure squid to the surface. The crew teaches you the technique — it’s easier than you’d think, and surprisingly addictive once you get the hang of it.

The best part? You BBQ your catch on board. Fresh squid grilled minutes after being pulled from the sea, eaten under the stars. It doesn’t get more authentic than this.

Tours run in the evening and are available through local operators in Chaloklum. Ask at Eclipse and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Planning Your Day Trips

Most day trips can be booked a day or two in advance — the exception is peak season around Christmas and New Year and Full Moon Party weeks, when popular tours like Ang Thong fill up fast.

For budget planning, day trips range from free (hiking to Bottle Beach) to around 2,000+ THB (Ang Thong park tour). Group trips and splitting longtail charters keep costs down.
